The Gardens of Doesburg
Gardening is pre-eminently an activity that requires attention, peace and concentration. Nature sets the course, you surrender to it and unwind. At least in theory.
At first glance, the gardens of Doesburg appear neat and trim, but they each have their own oddities. An absurd video in which residents talk about their gardens and gardens talk about their residents. We don’t get to see the residents themselves. We look at shrubs, trees and plants, which become personified through a personal item or piece of clothing and thus acquire a character of their own.
As the residents of Doesburg talk passionately about their gardens, they unconsciously reflect on their approach to life. Often they turn out to be just as irrepressible as nature and the contradictions that typify the way we relate to nature soon surface. While one person works constantly in the garden to minimize maintenance, another wants to let nature run free as much as possible, though certainly not without having a clear plan in mind. As one resident put it: “I want to spot hedgehogs here, as it were. That would be a symbol of our ultimate victory: Look what we have achieved together.”
